When you are feeling overwhelmed it can be useful to identify the different types of support that are available to you under the following categories: ‘me, we and us’.

  1. Me – What can I do (by myself) to help myself e.g. break the task down into small chunks, take regular breaks, put my phone away when I’m working, show perseverance etc.
  2. We – What can we (you and your peers/family/friends/colleagues) do to help each other e.g. support one another, share ideas and resources, ask for help when needed, be kind and caring etc.
  3. Us – What support does the school/place of work/community as a whole offer that can help e.g. revision classes, community events, access to a counsellor etc.

Next time you are feeling overwhelmed, get a piece of paper and a pen and write down “me, we and us” in separate columns. Then list all the support available to in terms of how you can support yourself (under ‘me’), how they can get/give support to/from others (under ‘we’) and what support the school/work/community offers (under ‘Us’).

Once you have completed all three columns you can start using the strategies under the ‘Me’ column first and move on to the other columns if and when they are needed.
